Today is the 74th birthday of Harold Ray Ragsdale, or as you probably know him, Country music star and comedian Ray Stevens.

Speaking as someone who has seen Ray Stevens in concert before, I can vouch for his remarkable talent and showmanship. In some ways, one has to wonder if Stevens didn't do himself a disservice by taking the comedic route. His skill as a musician and aptitude as a songwriter hold their own against the best in the business (or so I say.)

At the ripe-young age of 16, Stevens signed to Capitol Records "Prep Records" division.

Stevens later joined the National Recording Corporation (NRC) as an arranger, performer, and background vocalist. It was at this time he adopted the stage name of Ray Stevens, utilizing his middle name and his mother's maiden name.

The last time I saw Ray Stevens was about two decades, 60 pounds, and 6 inches of hair ago. That's my 60 pounds and hair, not his.

If you really want to enjoy a great performance and an excellent example of his songwriting, check this out.  Bet you didn't know this was him.
