UPDATE: The owners have decided to keep the store open a few more days. The store will remain open until Sunday, June 16.

Another locally owned and operated Grand Junction business will be closing their doors soon. Get ready to say "farewell" to a longstanding liquor store at 1st and Grand.

Grand Central Discount Liquors at 200 W. Grand Avenue, Unit 12, will be shutting their doors for good on Wednesday, June 12.

I can remember doing live remotes from this location over 10 years ago. They've been in business forever. The owners, a husband and wife, are the nicest people you'll ever meet.

As you know, I'm a huge fan of locally owned businesses. My lifestyle is not conducive to the concept of shopping online. For a brief period, I had a membership with an online wine club. That opportunity was directly related to my employment with a broadcasting company. I gave it a shot, but it wasn't for me. My shopping habits aim towards those businesses where you can see the product and pay cash at the register.

Let's talk about that closing date, shall we? The store will close on June 12. Does that date ring a bell? It should. Country Jam kicks off the very next day. As a matter of fact, if you're camping at the Jam, June 12 is the campground party.

I didn't get to look around much, but the liquidation sale undoubtedly offers an excellent opportunity for you to score great deals.

Why are they closing? Well, there's some good news. Their decision to close has nothing to do with business being slow. Not at all. The owners are simply at a point in their lives where they are looking to retire, have grandkids to spend time with, and no longer need the burden of running a business. My understanding is there's nothing easy about running a liquor store.

Thank you for all the years of service to Grand Junction. I wish you a happy retirement. The owners have made it very clear they are making their way to Country Jam, hence the closing date. I can't help but think the first four days of your retirement are going to be one for the books.
