Go Here: Traveling Robot Zoo
Technically, this is an exhibit for children, but come on, so much cool stuff is wasted on kids. If you live in Texas, you've got until January 29th to meet a gigantic giraffe robot, and if you don't want to meet a giant giraffe robot, we don't know what to say to you, really. Not in TX? Don't worry, though, these robots travel. BONUS: Weirdly outdated kid fashion, after the jump.
The 5,000 square-foot traveling Robot Zoo is currently touring the country to bring gigantic, mechanized animals to a city near you. The exhibit breaks down the complex biomechanics of 8 different animals by recreating them on a truly giant scale, including an 18-foot giant squid which propels itself, a house fly with 10-foot wings that walks across the ceiling and a color-shifting chameleon.
Each robot has a cutaway built into the design which exposes their complex system of robo-innards, pumps, shock absorbers and gears. As awesome as this all sounds, Im sort of glad I didn't visit the Robot Zoo as a kid, as I had somewhat of a hard time separating fact and fiction. I was also just easily confused in general -- when I first heard about Planned Parenthood I thought it was called "Planet Parenthood," and spent a good long while wondering why anyone would go to that sort of theme restaurant.
Oh god, who took that child's legs? No time to worry; the exhibit also features many hands-on activities which might be weird to participate in as a grown-ass-man, so bring someone's kid along with you as a buffer. Bonus: You'll look like you're interested in educating the youth of America, even if you really just want to hog the robot controller.
If you've ever wondered what goes on inside of a giant mechanical platypus (and who hasn't?) the traveling Robot Zoo is most likely coming to a city near you, so be sure to check the website for the list of cities and dates.
