Local vets are partnering with Mesa County Animal Services to lower the cost of fixing your dog or cat.

Let me start by saying "it's a limited time offer" so if you need the service, act now. This special deal only happens once a year. The Animal Assistance Foundation is a statewide organization that's provided spay and neuter vouchers to Mesa County residents for the last 7 years.

The Animal Assistance Foundation has a long history in Colorado. The organization was first started by Louise Harrison, the granddaughter of brewer Adolph Coors. She was a lifelong supporter of animal causes and founder of the Denver Dumb Friends League. That group was one of the first to recognize the importance of spay and neuter programs that would later become the Animal Assistance Foundation. Their mission is simple, to “take care of the animals of Colorado.” Today, this organization honors Louise and her commitment to controlling pet overpopulation. The spay and neuter voucher program is the hallmark of the foundation.

This year there are 14 veterinarians in Mesa County participating in the program. That’s the most in the history of the promotion. With a voucher, the cost of the procedure is just $25. "Over the years we have had a very high degree of success with this program,” says Doug Frye with Mesa County Animal Services. "This is by far the best program that the county has offered for people to bring their animals in to get spayed and neutered,” adds Alyssa Hunt, Office Manager of the Canyon Country Animal Hospital.

How do you take advantage of the program? First, contact a participating veterinarian and make an appointment with the doctor. After the consultation, you'll know if you're eligible to participate in the voucher program. Have your pet's rabies vaccinations records ready as well.
