We have all received a gift that we already have or that we really don't want. It crosses our mind to just return the item and get something else or to give the gift to someone else. There is nothing wrong with re-gifting but there are a few rules you must follow to avoid embarrassment.

If you receive a gift that you already have or don't really need, there is no problem re-gifting it. Here are a couple rules you must follow though:

1. The Item Must be New and Unopened

I think it's obvious that you don't re-gift used items but people still do it. NO USED ITEMS! Unless of course it is a White Elephant Gift Exchange of some sort. Also, don't open the gift and try to re-gift it. If you get cologne and take it out, spray it, realize that you don't like the smell, and put it back, it is not okay to re-gift.

2. Don't Re-Gift Just Because You Didn't Like It

Don't take the chance of re-gifting something just because you don't like it. If it was maybe something you would of gotten for someone else anyways or it's something you think someone else would enjoy more, then it's okay to re-gift.

3. The Gift Should be Unwrapped and Re-wrapped for new Recipient

Take all of the wrapping paper off of the gift before you re-gift it. You don't want to take the chance that someone put a card inside addressed to you. Plus, if someone knows you don't wrap gifts very well and you have a neatly wrapped gift, it might set off an alarm.

4. Don't Re-Gift to Someone in the same Social Circle

You don't want a "Seinfeld" situation to happen to you. If you don't know what I'm talking about, watch the video above. Make sure when you re-gift, it is to someone who doesn't know the original giver. Save yourself the embarrassment.
