The Mesa Valley Education Association and District 51 reached agreement Tuesday on a raise for the teachers in District 51.

The raise, a 4.6% increase is a two percent cost of living increase as well as a 1.6 percent raise and a salary increase of $500.

Other staff members in the district will also see increases except for administrators who are in a salary freeze for one year.

Many teachers were hoping they would see a ten percent increase similar to what teachers in Denver recently received. Denver teachers as you may recall had to strike to get their demands met, where District 51 teachers did not and have maintained a good working relationship with the district.

There is also hope the increase will help the district recruit and keep teachers locally. It certainly is nice to see professionals working to make sure our children get the best possible education.

Both the district and the union were able to reach an agreement without any lost school days,
