Remember When Devin Dawson Did That Awesome Taylor Swift Cover?
Devin Dawson has just released his debut single, but he's not entirely new to country fans. Dawson gained viral fame in 2014 as part of a Taylor Swift mashup that impressed the superstar so much, she shared it with her fans.
Nashville-based singer-songwriter Louisa Wendorff uses her YouTube account to promote her original songs, as well as sharing covers, and in December of 2014 she and Dawson teamed up for an acoustic-based mashup of two of Swift's hits.
The clip begins with Dawson singing "Style" and accompanying himself with simple, understated chords, with Wendorff joining in on "Blank Space" sung in counterpoint. The pair strip the two songs down to their bare essentials to join them together, making them into a haunting vocal chorale that moved Swift to tweet the clip along with one simple word, "OBSESSED." The video has since garnered more than 33 million views on YouTube.
Swift is not alone in her enthusiasm for Dawson's talents. Now signed to Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group, Dawson recently released his debut single, "All on Me," which will impact country radio on Monday (May 1). He will make his national television on May 4, performing the song on Late Night With Seth Meyers. The hot newcomer is also opening a string of dates on Tim McGraw and Faith Hill's 2017 Soul2Soul Tour, and an unusually enthusiastic press release from UMG promises: "This artist is going to change the country music landscape."
