Denver School Insists on Female Dress Code For Mosque Visit
A school in Denver had planned a field trip to, among other places, a local mosque but asked their female students to abide by the religion's dress code.
The notice sent home with students read, in part:
“We will be visiting the Denver Mosque, the Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral, and the Rodef-Shalom Synagogue. There is a dress code for this trip. All students must wear appropriate long pants. Ankles must be covered. Girls must bring wide scarves or hooded sweatshirts for the mosque.”
The field trip was arranged for the students in the school's world religion class and organizers felt it would be a good way for the students to learn about the religion and to see inside of a mosque, which most had never done before.
It would be expected that, going to different houses of worship that there would be a dress code and that the students would have to abide by it in order to participate.
The students were also going to visit the Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral and Rodef-Shalom Synagogue as part of the trip.
