As a lover of dogs, I never understand why a city would ban a specific breed. In my opinion, there are no bad dogs just bad dog owners. But finally, there is a Denver city council member that has proposed lifting the city-wide ban on pit bulls after more than 30 years. It still drives me crazy that to make this happen there would be a pit bull probation period but at least it's a step in the right direction.

The details were laid out by thedenverchannel.com regarding city council member Christopher Herndon leading the charge on changing the ban which has been in place since 1989. The specific dog breeds that are under the pit bull ban currently in place include American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, American and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.

The new proposal would include each pit bull owner registering their dog with Denver Animal Protection and get the dog a breed-restricted license. The owner would also have to provide the name and address of the dog, two emergency contacts, a description of the dog and proof that the pup was micro-chipped and up to date on their rabies vaccine. Most of these rules aren't a big deal because it's just part of being a responsible dog owner but that's why this should be for all dogs, not just pit bulls.

Each pit bull would be on a probationary period for 3 years. After that period if there were no violations (no attacks on other dogs or people), the dog would no longer need a special license.

Other Colorado cities with dog bans include Aurora, Lone Tree, Louisville and Commerce City.

Again, there are no bad dogs just bad dog owners!
