Here's a great story about compassion for helpless animals. A father and son made a "deering" rescue of three deer stranded on the ice in Minnesota's Albert Lea Lake.

James, the son, heard about the animals' plight from a Facebook post and called his dad asking for help. The two wanted to rescue the animals before they froze or starved to death.

Using a hovercraft and rope, the two men harnessed and slowly pulled each exhausted deer to shore, where after some rest, the animals were able to stand and head off into the woods.

While it's possible the deer were too exhausted to resist, I'd like to think they instinctively knew these humans were there to save, not hurt them.
