A teenaged girl, hiking with the family, found out more than she expected about bison recently.

The group was on a trail hiking through Theodore Roosevelt National Park and saw two bison fighting nearby. In most cases like this, when you see wildlife, especially wildlife as big as bison are your best bet is to go in a different direction and let them be wild animals.

But that's not what she did.

The teen stayed close to the trail but had come between the two fighting bison and, one of them seeing her as a threat charged her, striking her in the back, goring her thigh and tossing her six feet in the air.

The teen was treated at the scene by park personnel and paramedics until she could be flown to a hospital in Bismarck, N.D.where she is in stable condition.

Park regulations state you should stay at least 25 feet away from large animals in the park.
