The Peyton School District near Colorado Springs plans to allow teachers and others to carry guns at school.

The plan is to have the teachers and select others go through training, then act as security guards at the school.

There are at least 30 school districts and charter schools let teachers carry, however, there is no statewide training and no regulations to cover them.

Arming teachers has been discussed at great length since armed intruders have increased in numbers in schools across the country. But without proper training, no one is quite sure what will happen should the need arise for armed teachers to rise up against an intruder.

Police departments and others have a clear-cut training regimen to make sure they know how and when to use a firearm in a school. Without training, it is thought that students could be injured as well as an intruder.

Going forward, school districts that allow teachers to be armed will have to make sure they are trained. Districts say the will try to get state grants to fund the training.

Are guns in schools the future of education?
