Size Matters: Colorado’s National Parks Are Larger Than These Countries
Have you ever wondered which state has the most number of National Parks? On top of the list would be the state of California, with nine parks. Alaska has eight, Utah has five, and Colorado has four.
Have you ever wondered just how large Colorado's National Parks are? They are so big that they are larger than several small states, islands, and even some countries.
America's Largest National Park
The largest National Park in the country is gigantic. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve in Alaska includes 13.2 million acres of land. The park is bigger than Yellowstone and Yosemite combined and is home to the 18,000-foot peak, Mount Saint Elias.
Colorado's Huge National Parks
Colorado has been pretty generous when setting aside land for National Parks. Take a look at the size of each park below.
- Rocky Mountain National Park = 267,795 acres (418 miles)
- Great Sand Dunes National Park = 107,341 acres (167 miles)
- Mesa Verde National Park = 52,485 acres (82 miles)
- Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park = 30,780 acres (48 miles)
Colorado's National Parks Are Larger Than These Nations
Colorado's National Parks are bigger than places like Tahiti, Curacao (Netherlands), Pine Island (Florida), and several other locations that probably wished they were as big as a Colorado National Park. We'll show off just how big each park is in Colorado in the gallery below before including a few more National Parks from our neighboring states for comparison.
