Mount Garfield is more than just a part of the bookcliffs near Grand Junction; it's a landmark that is familiar to all residents of Colorado's Western Slope. The first time people see the mountain, they can't help but stop and photograph it. Locals know, it's not uncommon to see tourists risking their lives on the shoulder of I-70 between Clifton and Palisade trying to take a photo.

The Presidential Name That Stands Tall

Mount Garfield takes its name from America's 20th President, James Garfield. Garfield won ten elections in a row as a Congressman, serving 18 years before rising to the office of President. Garfield was assassinated just 200 days after taking office. This assassination resonated with those on the frontier who were just establishing the Grand Junction area. The mountain seemed like a fitting tribute to the fallen President.

A Steep Climb with Big Rewards

Mesa County residents know that while the Mount Garfield trail is short, it is still a demanding 2,000-foot climb up over the valley floor. The trail is a steep route up the side of the Book Cliffs, followed by a scramble to a narrow summit. Locals who have climbed to the summit have told me to start early, pack plenty of water, bring trekking poles, and a plastic sled to ride down on the descent.

No matter how you make it to the top, the reward is the same for everyone. You’ll see wild horses roaming below, the Grand Mesa, the Colorado National Monument, and the orchards and vineyards spread out beneath the mountain.
