Just a couple of weeks ago Western Colorado was cheering for several teams entering the Colorado High School Activities Association's post-season playoffs. Both the Grand Junction Tigers and Warriors made the postseason, and so did Fruita, Delta, Palisade, Meeker, Durango, and several others.

In the end, it's the Montrose Red Hawks who will represent the Western Slope as they will play in the Colorado 4A State Title Game coming up this weekend.

Colorado's 2024 High School Football Playoffs

The CHSAA 1A and 2A Champions have already been decided. Wray won the 1A championship over Forge Christian 48-21. Classical Academy defeated Wellington in the 2A 42-36. The 3A, 4A, and 5A Championship games will be played this Saturday, December 7th, at CSU's Canvas Stadium in Fort Collins, Colorado.

  • 3A Championship: Thompson Valley vs. Mead, Dec. 7, 10 a.m.
  • 4A Championship: Montrose vs. Broomfield, Dec. 7, 2 p.m.
  • 5A Championship: Cherry Creek vs. Legend, Dec. 7, 6 p.m.

Title Game History

The 13-0 Montrose Red Hawks will take on the 12-1 Eagles of Broomfield High School in what will feel like a home game for Broomfield playing nearby in Fort Collins.

The Montrose Red Hawks enter the title game with a record of 76-18 under coach Brett Mertens. The Red Hawks's last state title came in 1950 with a 20-7 win over Lakewood. Montrose has appeared in title games in 1978, 1990, 1991, and most recently in 2013.

After years of collecting and digitizing Western Colorado photographer Robert Grant's prints, it was thought they had all been turned over to Grand Junction's Museum of the West. Well, after a little housekeeping over the Labor Day weekend, three more boxes of prints were found.
