It's not uncommon for Colorado to have the lowest temperature in the country. Considering how badly the rest of the country is getting pounded, it is a bit surprising we were colder than some of the eastern states.

Congratulations, Lake George, you were the coldest place in the lower 48 for Friday, February 4, 2022. According to the National Weather Service, you spent the early morning hours basking away at a toasty -32 degrees.

You'll find Lake George roughly 107 southwest of Denver, and 38 miles west of Colorado Springs. The town sits at an altitude of 7,992 feet,.

Lake George sits in the Pike National Forest west of Ute Pass. The town got its start as a stage stop but soon became a hub for the Colorado Midland Railroad from Colorado Springs.

It seems Lake George is well known for its world-class trout fishing. Other activities found in Lake Geoge include viewing fossils and petrified redwoods at nearby Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument. Tourists enjoy scenic and historic auto tours of Elevenmile Canyon and the Tarryall Valley.

When it comes to the town itself, it appears Lake Geoge consists of a general store, a motel, cabins, and a guest lodge. Nearby you'll find campgrounds at Elevenmile Canyon and Eleven Mile State Park.

Normally, when searching for the lowest temperature in the nation, I zoom right in on Gunnison, Colorado. The National Weather Service reports tonight's low in Gunnison will hit -17. Lake George won't have it nearly so bad tonight (February 4, 2022) with an expected low of 4.
