Why Drinking and Driving is A Very Bad Idea in Colorado

Within the next few days, we'll see increased patrol in the state of Colorado in an effort to reduce impaired driving.

According to a press release from the Colorado Department of Transportation, law enforcement will be turning the heat up on those driving impaired.

Impaired Driving in Colorado is Getting Worse

Unfortunately, numbers for impaired driving are rising instead of dropping. In 2021, there was a 16% increase in impaired driving. Last year, officers arrested 391 impaired drivers during their 10-day blitz.

This is why Colorado law enforcement is hitting the streets in full force during January 14-17 with a campaign called, The Heat Is On Winter Blitz.

Grand Junction Police Plans

In the city of Grand Junction, there will be two DUI officers patrolling from 2200 hours until 0300 hours during the blitz.

“All impaired driving deaths in 2021 could have — and should have — been avoided,” said Col. Matthew Packard, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “The new year is a chance to reset your own beliefs and behaviors around driving: buckle up, put down distractions and always drive sober. Stop the excuses, you're not driving alone out there.”

Colorado’s DUI and DWAI Limits

Do you know what the law is in Colorado for BAC (blood alcohol content)?

CDOT states that the limits are:

• 05 Percent BAC for DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired)
• 08 Percent BAC for DUI (Driving Under the Influence)

However, just because you don't go over the BAC limits, that doesn't mean you can't get arrested for driving while impaired. If you're BAC is over 0 then you can still be arrested for driving while impaired.
