There is a December cold snap headed to western Colorado. On the upside, you'll get to enjoy your fireplace more. You can heat up some hot cocoa, or climb under your favorite fleece.

By the end of the week, we could see a couple of overnight lows in the single digits. Right now these temps are possible by Saturday and Sunday morning in Grand Junction, Fruita, and Palisade. This got us thinking about the coldest temps of all time in December.

How Cold Does it Get in Colorado in December?

We know Colorado has seen incredible winter storms again and again. Sometimes the snow brings extremely cold air with it, and sometimes it does not. While just about any part of the state can see sub-zero temps, to date the coldest reading in December happened in Maybell, Colorado in 1978. The reading was -50.

In Grand Junction, the average low temperature in December is usually between 20 and 26 degrees.
