Every Christmas, the women in my family had a treasured tradition: We'd dress up, head to Denver and watch "The Nutcracker" live at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. The dancers were incredible, the performances flawless and the Christmas cheer was palpable.
However, when the pandemic hit, we had to hit pause on this annual ritual, and so did everyone else. 2020 brought a first to the opera house: The Colorado Ballet cancelled its 60th performance of the beloved holiday classic, "The Nutcracker".
The Colorado Ballet knows that it's been an unusual year, and just like many venues, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House had to cancel many shows from the company, which put the careers of the dancers at risk. The ballet itself furloughed dancers and, according to 9News, even had to cut staff salaries due to the difficulties of the pandemic.
Now, though, the magic is back.
9News reported that in November, "The Nutcracker" will reopen with new sets and new costumes, giving the show a jolt of freshness. The season itself will kick off with "Giselle" in October, and coming in 2022: "Romeo & Juliet," "The Wizard of Oz," and "Ballet Masterworks."
