Country music fans around the world were heartbroken this morning upon hearing the news Charlie Daniels had died at the age of 83. Take a listen to a conversation with Charlie Daniels recorded four years ago before a show at Grand Junction's historic Avalon Theatre.

If you've spent much time in Western Colorado, chances are you've seen Charlie Daniels and the Charlie Daniels Band in concert more than a few times. In recent years he's performed at the Avalon Theatre and at Las Colonias Amphitheater.

Charlie Daniels was no stranger to Western Colorado. He had a second home in the Four Corners region of the state. While he spent most of his time in Tennessee, he did call Colorado home at least two months out of the year. Of course, considering his enthusiasm for performing live shows, he spent a considerable amount of time on the road, well into his 80's.

Speaking of live shows, listen to what he says at 6:43 in the video above. This comes from a phone call I had with him shortly before a Grand Junction show. The photo at the top comes from backstage at Country Jam.

Daniels died at Summit Medical Center in Hermitage, Tennessee, after suffering a stroke. The North Carolina native is survived by wife Hazel and son Charlie Daniels Jr.
