Why April 12?

Didn't Colorado become a state on August 1, 1876? According to America's Library, that is the case. Why, then, is April 12 recognized as National Colorado Day? Several webpages including Event Guide and National Day Calendar mark April 12 as a day to celebrate Colorado.

It looks as though the distinction is as follows:

  • August 1 = Colorado Day
  • April 12 = National Colorado Day

April 12 is in fact a very important day. In addition to it being the day we celebrate National Colorado Day, it's also National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.

Ways to Celebrate National Colorado Day

It's easy to celebrate in Colorado. No matter where you live in the state, you can probably find something fun and exciting to do within a ten-minute walk of your front door.

National Day Calendar offers a handful of suggestions:

  • Take a hike over a rocky trail or visit the bustling capital city
  • Discover out-of-the-way places
  • Celebrate some of our most famous residents including Florence Sabin (the first woman to graduate from Johns Hopkins Medical School), Paul Whiteman, the "King of Jazz," Scott Carpenter, the second American to orbit the Earth, and of course, Western Colorado's very own Dalton Trumbo.
