What's Missing from 5th Street in Orchard Mesa?

When driving across the 5th Street Bridge, leaving downtown, and heading to Orchard Mesa, you've probably noticed an unfinished building on top of the hill to the right. It was dark brown, and only feet away from the sidewalk.

It's Been Around Forever

I'm sure that structure was there back in 1983 when my family moved from town to Orchard Mesa. For the better part of 40 years it has just kind of... sat there.

In Case Your Still Not Familiar With It

If you look back about five years, this was the building with the Trump "Donald The Dragon Slayer" sign on it. For the last umpteen years it has featured various "FOR SALE" signs.

Visual Confirmation

I couldn't believe what I wasn't seeing. That structure had been there since I was 13 years old, maybe longer. Suddenly... POOF! It's gone. I had to double-check

I've tried to visit this structure before. As you walk behind the neighboring thrift stores, you're immediately welcomed by numerous "NO TRESPASSING" and "BEWARE OF DOG" signs. As a result, I never got close enough to go inside.

Today, just for the sake of confirming it is in fact no longer there, I decided to get a little closer. In other words, I trespassed. A handful of workers were on hand with machinery, removing the last bit of remaining rubble.

Farewell... Whatever You Were

I posted a few years ago about this structure. Supposedly, it was going to have been a restaurant. After construction began, the city got its panties in a wad because they felt it was too close to the road. So, construction stopped. That's the popular version, anyway.

It's going to be weird driving across the 5th Street Bridge. I'm used to being "welcomed" to Orchard Mesa by this brown building. I'll just have to find a new landmark.
