Brandi Carlile Wins Big With Three Consecutive Awards at 2019 Grammys
Without a doubt, Brandi Carlile had a wonderful 2019 Grammy Awards. From a performance earlier in the week with Willie Nelson to honor Dolly Parton performing “Everything’s Beautiful (In Its Own Way),” to winning awards, to giving a showstopping performance on the actual show, she made a huge name for herself to fans who might not have seen her before.
Carlile won three awards in a row during the pre-televised portion of the 2019 Grammy Awards. Yes, you read that right — Carlile won all three so quickly that she didn't even have time to sit back down between the wins. She won for Best American Roots Performance and Best American Roots Song for "The Joke," and took home Best Americana Album for By the Way, I Forgive You.
Carlile had a speech on hand for only one win; win or lose, she was going to give it to her co-producer Dave Cobb even if they lost for Best Americana Album. Carlile was the most nominated female artist at the 2019 Grammy Awards. Having an Americana artist in one of the major categories had not happened in over a decade. She invited all of her collaborators on the stage to share in the moments with her.
Later during the televised portion of the 2019 Grammy Awards, Carlile performed "The Joke" to an impressed crowd that gave a standing ovation. During her performance, the camera panned to Ashley McBryde in the crowd, who mouthed, "Wow."
Carlile was also nominated in the mainstream all-genre categories of Song and Record of the Year for "The Joke," but lost out to Childish Gambino's "This Is America" both times. By the Way, I Forgive You was also nominated for the all-genre Album of the Year award, which went to Kacey Musgraves for Golden Hour.
Carlile earned her first Grammy nomination in 2015 for Best Americana Album for The Firewatcher's Daughter.
