The Aurora, Colo. movie theater that the horrific shooting took place in 2012 has been handed it's verdict.

Not Liable. That was the verdict rendered by a jury to Century 16 Theater Multiplex.

12 innocent people were killed while more than 70 were wounded at midnight showing of the blockbuster movie 'The Dark Knight Rises.' This article from Reuters goes into more detail about the case.

The main points of argument were:

From the prosecution

  • the theater failed to provided standard security that night, especially for a much anticipated movie as this one. On normal weekends they always have had armed security.
  • no CCTV (closed circuit) security video
  • no guards around the building
  • no silent alarms on exit doors

The defenses stated

  • this event was not a common occurrence
  • the event was completely unpredictable
  • the shooter was unforeseeable and unstoppable
  • impossible to safeguard against this type of act
