An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale occurred this morning about 10 miles from Salt Lake City.

While there is no apparent damage being reported at this time, the area saw a loss of power and are now bracing themselves for the aftershocks that are sure to come. Some aftershocks were being felt about 20 minutes after the initial earthquake.

This is the first earthquake to hit Salt Lake City since 1992 when a 5.9 earthquake struck near St. George, Utah.

According to the USGS,  magnitude 5 type earthquakes in that area occur once every 10 years, while quakes registering higher occur once in every 50 years.

Utah officials are not reporting injuries or loss of life as a result of the earthquake, but the USGS is continuing to monitor the area as small aftershocks continue.
