These three laws have come into play in Colorado as of January 1, 2018. Here are three new laws for Colorado and what they mean for you in 2018.

The new year brings some new changes in Colorado and I wanted to make sure I'm in the know for 2018. I reached out to Grand Junction's Public Information Officer Heidi Davidson to see what I needed to know. These three laws are currently in place, welcome to 2018 Colorado.

  • Teen Sexting

According to Officer Davidson, the new law lessens consequences for teenagers caught sexting. The prosecutor could now file misdemeanor charges versus felony charges.

This also means that those found guilty are not required to register as sex offenders.

  • Home Growing

Beginning on January 1, 2018, home growing is now regulating the number of plants based on residence instead of residents.

Colorado's new home grow law limits your residence to a max of 12 plants. In 2017, each resident was allowed to have up to six plants.

  • Hit-and-Running

The new law for hit-and-run accident enforces the importance of staying on the scene of an accident. In 2018 the Department of Revenue can now choose to suspend your driver's license.

This can happen if you leave the scene of an accident that seriously injures or kills someone, according to Officer Davidson. In the past, your license could only be revoked if you were convicted of the crime.
