Summer is winding down and your dog is past due for a cool, relaxing dip in the Lincoln Park Pool. "Dog Days" returns to Grand Junction this Sunday, September 10, and we have five rock-solid reasons why you should take your four-legged friend for a swim.

I take my dog, Fluffy, to "Dog Days" every year. For the record, Fluffy really sucks when it comes to swimming. He's the best dog in the world, but he refuses to get in the pool. Take note, Fluffy enjoys any chance to get in the mud or run into a bog of filthy pond water, but he simply refuses to get in the pool.

So, when Dog Days roll around, does this mean the dogs jump in the pool with you? No! Humans are not allowed in the pool on this special day. This Sunday, it's dogs only!

What if your dog isn't big on swimming? Would you want to jump in a pool wearing a mink coat? Me either. Even if they don't go off the high dive, they can still interact with hundreds of other dogs, play, and even chase tennis balls and Frisbees around the fenced-in pool area at Lincoln Park.

Here's the list of reasons why you should participate in this Sunday's event:

1. Following a hot summer, your dog has earned a relaxing day in the pool.

2. It teaches your dog to socialize with other dogs.

3. You won't have to give your dog a bath afterward, since it is nice, clean water.

4. Your dog could learn rescue diving techniques and could eventually save a life.

5. There is something very enjoyable about watching dogs having fun.

Dog Days is this Sunday, September 10, from 10 a.m to 2 pm. The cost for "Dog Days" is $5 per dog or up to four dogs (belonging to the same family) for $12.

Small dogs weighing 25 pounds or less get to use the pool first, with hours from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Large dogs can swim from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
