It's happening again - residents of Western Colorado are receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be with the IRS. Recipients of these calls are informed they will be on the receiving end of a lawsuit filed by the IRS if they don't pay up.

The incoming call originates from the number (509) 587-3103. Some recipients of this call have actually had the threat left via voice mail.

According to IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel, this scam is not localized to Western Colorado. People across the country have received similar calls.

This scam has hit taxpayers in nearly every state in the country. We want to educated taxpayers so they can help protect themselves. Rest assured, we do not and will not ask for credit card numbers over the phone, nor request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer." - Danny Werfel, IRS Acting Commissioner

Please note, IRS agents are very clear in the fact they will not call you. Wefel says the IRS usually makes initial contact with taxpayers via mail.
