Apparently there's a new trend in kindergarten called "redshirting,"& NO it has nothing do do with the color of shirt they wear!

Parents that adhere to this trend are INTENTIONALLY holding their kid back a year in school.

The theory behind this is that when they start the next school year, they'll be OLDER than the other kids . . . meaning smarter and bigger!

Now back when I was growing up, I remember parents whose kids were born in the summer had to decide whether to start their kid in school early, so they'd be the youngest in class . . . or hold them back a year.

I WAS one of those kids and I was always a year younger than everyone in my class and took PRIDE in starting early . . . to my parents I think it was a sign that I was smart and emotionally advanced.

But oh how times have changed.

Apparently the "redshirting" comes from the sports practice, usually football, where a coach decides not to play someone their first year to let them develop as a player.  By redshirting them, it doesn't cost the player a year of their eligibility.

According to the study, "Schools serving larger proportions of white and high-income children have far higher rates of delayed entry." Meaning that it's RICH WHITE PEOPLE trying to get their kids that edge.
