Highway 550 over Red Mountain Pass remains closed as work continues to make the road safe following a rockslide earlier this month.

According to the Denver Post, technical climbers are helping the Colorado Department of Transportation with the project. Plans are to install netting to help catch falling rocks and some large boulders are being moved, or removed altogether.

While the work is necessary to make travel on the road safe, the project is a big pain for motorists needing to get from Ouray to Silverton. The detour over Dallas Divide and Lizard Head Pass adds 100 miles to the trip.

The rockslide is about two miles outside of Ouray. Check out this video that shows how the rocks have showered down onto the highway.
