A total of 24 teams of men will compete Thursday in the annual Men in Heels Race, but the event is really about the women.

The 7th annual Men in Heels Race takes place Thursday evening (September 15) in downtown Grand Junction at the final farmers market of the season to raise funds and awareness for the Latimer House.

The Latimer House helps women affected by domestic violence and sexual assault providing services such as a crisis line, emergency shelter, and counseling.

It is sad to think such a facility is even necessary in this community, but, the fact is, it is. The Men in Heels Race not only helps to raise funds for Latimer House, but it raises awareness of the problem of domestic violence in the Grand Valley.

Last year's Men in Heels race raised $29,000 for the Hilltop facility. You can donate to your favorite team here. Mesa County Sheriff's Office, Grand Junction Police, Lions Club, Community Hospital, and Alpine Bank are just some of the teams competing.

Racing begins at 5:30PM Thursday on Colorado Avenue between 4th and 5th. This year, there is a new, longer course which should be better for spectators. You can rest assured there will be a large contingent of spectators cheering on the men in high heels. It really is quite a spectacle.

If you can't make it to downtown Grand Junction, you can watch the Men in Heels Race on Fox 4.
