A video released by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department reveals the very real danger law enforcement workers face on a daily basis.

The incident occurred on August 31 on Highway 85. A vehicle was stopped after making an unsafe right turn. Inside the vehicle were two adult females and two adult males.  The passenger in the rear right seat, later identified as 61-year-old Paul Askins of Colorado Springs, was asked to step out of the vehicle. That's when the situation escalated.

Authorities say Askins emerged from the vehicle with a gun pointed at police. Police opened fire, striking Askins multiple times and fatally wounding him. Police officers were not injured in the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting have not been identified and the investigation is ongoing.
