One of Grand Junction’s Most Historic Houses is Up for Sale Right Now

One of Grand Junction’s most famous homes, often referred to as “The Alligator House,” is up for sale right now. Have you taken the tour?

This historic house at 639 N. 7th Street in Grand Junction is up for sale, and if you have an extra $449,000.00 burning a hole in your pocket, it could be yours.

According to the Daily Sentinel, the house, built in 1926, has historically been referred to as the Murr house, the Willsea house, and ultimately, the Alligator house.

Surprisingly, in its 90-plus year history, the house has had only four owners. Whenever one gets curious as to the history of a Grand Junction landmark, the thing to do is contact my dad. That’s just what I did. Here’s what he had to say about the house.

That used to be Charles Willsea’s house, the owner of Central Chevrolet. The Chevrolet dealer used to be in the 200 block of Main street. I worked for Mr. Willsea for several years as a mechanic. The house is also known as the “alligator house” because Mr. Willsea kept a pet alligator in the basement and backyard. Mr. Willsea died in 1979, and his wife Mary died in 1996. – Arlie Jordan

The house has jumped in price over the last 20 years. Back in 1996, it sold for $181,900.00. Today, the asking price is $449,000.00.

Much of the house has been modified or restored in recent years. Many features, including the hardwood floors and trim on the main floor, are original. According to the Daily Sentinel, some of the original light fixtures remain.

There can be little doubt you’ve seen this house a hundred times before. Now, via the gallery above, take a brief tour of the inside of Grand Junction’s historic Alligator House.
