A recent survey asked people how likely it is they will work on Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day, and one in four said they will definitely work one of those days.

The results of the survey published in National Journal indicate 24% of Americans will definitely work on at least one of the upcoming holidays, while another 9% say it is somewhat likely. So, it could be as many as one in three that will work on a holiday.

There are people who have to work on the holidays. There is just no way around it. But, what is surprising is the fact that 44% are working the holiday because they choose to. The survey didn't indicate why they choose to work. Maybe it's because of receiving holiday pay. Maybe it's because they feel like they need to.Maybe they just love their job that much.

The fact is, we are a working society. Our jobs are our livelihood. Most of us have to work in order to exist and survive. But, we don't need to work every day of the year -- and we should be entitled to some holiday time off without feeling guilty about it. We need time for ourselves, and we need more time with our families.

If it's within our power to not work on the holiday we need to take advantage of the opportunity to be off. I've never heard of someone on their death bed saying they wished they would have worked more.
