You might not be getting a free lunch, but prom dresses in Grand Junction are absolutely free.

It's time for the annual prom dress giveaway in Grand Junction which makes it possible for any young person in the Grand Valley - or beyond - to attend this year's prom with class, style, and high fashion without doling out a wad of cash.

This is the 8th annual prom dress giveaway, and every year people are skeptical about the event. How can prom dresses actually be free?

The answer is simple. Hardly worn prom dresses have been donated to the cause and when this effort first began there were over a thousand dresses available to choose from. Most prom dresses are worn once - maybe twice. Then what? They just hang in the closet and get old and dusty.

The idea to recycle started with local seamstress Cheryl Whitehurst and now Carla Purcella is carrying on the vision just because it's "our thing we do to help the community," Carla says.

There are no strings attached. The prom dresses are free, and now they even have prom clothes for guys. They will even perform free alterations, and the clothes don't have to be returned after prom unless you want to donate back to the cause.

It sounds too good to be true, but the fact is, this is absolutely true.

So here's what you need to know about the giveaway. It happens this Saturday (March 24) noon-4pm and Sunday from noon until 3 at the Elks Lodge 249 South 4th Street.

By the way, this is open to any high school student regardless of where they are from. Carla emphasizes this is not limited to Grand Junction and Mesa County students.
