Now this is dedication. Check out the teacher's contract my Great-Aunt Carmen Jordan signed back in August of 1933.

Good ol' Aunt Carmen taught several grades at a small-town school in Southern Illinois. Take a look at her contract, and check out the monthly salary she received.

Yes, you read that right. $40 per month for eight months a year. As modest as her compensation was, it was obviously better than many people earned that year. In 1933, one-third of the working-age population in the U.S. was unemployed. Of course, in 1933, milk was 14 cents a quart, eggs were a nickel a dozen, and bread was 9 cents per loaf.

As if her salary weren't already modest, check out the list of rules she had to agree to on the list below.

Rules for teachers..

"Rural schools set rules for female teachers."
In 1915, a list of rules were established for unmarried female teachers
in the rural schools of Franklin County.
The rules were:
1. You will not marry during the term of your contract.
2. You are not to keep company with men.
3. You must be home between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.,
unless attending a school function.
4. You may not loiter in downtown ice cream stores.
5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have
permission from the school board.
6. You may not ride in a carriage or automobile with a man
unless he is your brother or father.
7. You may not smoke cigarettes.
8. You may not dress in bright colors.
9. You may under no circumstances dye your hair.
10. You must wear at least two petticoats.
11. Your dresses must not be any shorter that 2 inches above the ankle.
12. To keep the schoolroom neat and clean, you must:
*sweep the floor at least once a day;
* scrub the floor at least once a week;
* clean the blackboard at least once a day;
* start the fire at 7 a.m. so the room will be warm by 8 a.m. "

Heaven forbid anyone should violate Rule #4, "loitering in downtown ice cream shops." Loitering in a downtown porn shop I can understand. Nobody's supposed to do that. They don't allow loitering. But ice cream shops? I sincerely doubt that Benton, Illinois even had an ice cream shop. Even if they did, what goes on in there that is so scandalous it needs to be avoided?
