Tragic news hit Grand Junction yesterday when one of the Mesa County Sheriff's Office deputies was shot during a call yesterday. The deputy is currently on life support for the next 48 hours. Our thoughts go out to Deputy Geer and his family.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office only had one other officer killed in the line of duty. That was over a century ago.

In 1906, Jailer Edward Innes was struck in the head with a 2x4 during an escape attempt. The suspect did manage to escape but was captured four days later. Innes died then next day.

The Grand Junction Police Departments only fallen officer was K9 Gero in 2004, who was shot and killed while he and his handler helped another officer.

The Montrose Police Department and the Delta County Police Department both lost two officers in the line of duty. Montrose lost  one in 1983 and the other in 2009. Delta lost night Marshal Charles D. Pebley in 1928 and Officer Stephen Dale Hensley in 1973.
