Some inmates at the Mesa County jail planning an escape were making progress, but were caught before they finished preparing for the escape.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Department reports on Saturday evening (October 20) they got a tip about a possible escape attempt.

Deputies investigated and found a cell with a bunk leg partially broken off and the broken piece used to chip away a portion of the concrete floor into the ground underneath.

The four inmates in the cell were moved to another part of the detention facility. The damaged cell has been sealed off from the rest of the jail until the damage is repaired. Those repairs have been scheduled.

Deputies investigating the escape attempt determined the rest of the jail is secure. They are continuing their investigation by evaluating evidence and interviewing witnesses.

Specific charges against the inmates in the damaged cell will be decided when the investigation is complete.
