Maddie & Tae are back! The country harmony duo have announced the release of a brand-new single titled "Friends Don't."

The duo turned to social media to post an excerpt from "Friends Don't," which sonically expands on their previous acoustic-based approach by incorporating some more modern and pop-influenced audio elements while still retaining their signature vocal blend.

The lyrics describe a pair of friends whose feelings for one another may be starting to develop into something more: "Drive a little too slow / Take the long way home / Get a little too close / We do, but friends don't," they sing in the teaser they posted.

The duo scored a hit straight out of the gate when they released their debut single, "Girl in a Country Song," in 2014, but they suffered a career setback when their label, Dot Records, closed in 2017. "Friends Don't" will mark their first new single under a new deal with Mercury Records as part of Universal Music Group in Nashville.

"It's been a crazy past couple of years but we are so excited to announce that we have a brand new single coming out NEXT WEEK!!" they write to accompany the new music. "Keeping this a secret has been one of the hardest things we've ever done haha but we wanted this release to be extra special for y’all (our sweet, sweet fans). Thank you for being so patient & supportive. You'll never truly know how much that has meant to us."

"Friends Don't" is set for release on Friday (April 27). Fans can pre-save it via Spotify before it is officially available.

The duo debuted another new song, "One Heart to Another" at a live showcase during the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville in February.
