LoCash, the duo made up of Preston Brust and Chris Lucas, got their start in an unusual way: by breaking almost every rule as performers at Nashville's Wildhorse Saloon.

"It used to be, one of us would DJ, and one of us would go out with the mic," Brust tells The Boot. "Chris would go out with the mic, and I would DJ. And then after the break, I would go out with the mic, and Chris would DJ."

It didn't take long for the guys to switch things up, though -- to the delight of the audience.

"One night, we got bored," Brust recalls. "We opened up the drawer, and there were two mics. We were like, 'Let’s do it together. Let’s push play and walk out together.' We were just bored. The jokes were twice as funny, and the moment was twice as special."

Adds Lucas, "There was something there when we met and took two microphones out on the Wildhorse floor. We were having people do the craziest stuff; we were giving away mustard bottles. So we just knew we had something."

From there, LoCash (originally called LoCash Cowboys) took off. They released an album independently, before their eponymous release in 2013 on Average Joes Entertainment. And thanks to their recent No. 1 single, "I Love This Life" -- the title of their 2015 EP on Reviver Music -- Brust and Lucas have been spending much of their time on the road, forming a solid friendship that is more brotherly than professional.

"It’s yin and yang," Brust explains. "When one of us is having a bad day, the other one picks the other one up. There’s this thing about the two of us that I can’t explain. It happens on stage. It happens in the studio. It happens when we write a song. It happens in interviews. I can’t explain it. I know this sounds so old school, but all I can do is go back to the days of the Smothers Brothers; I used to watch that with my parents.

"There was just this thing: It just happens between them, and you can’t put your finger on quite what it is, but it’s special, and it resonates onstage, and it resonates through the song," he continues. "That’s kind of what it is for me. I don’t try to explain it. I don’t try to figure it out."

LoCash are enjoying connecting with their fans while on tour as much as they are enjoying the actual performances.

"In the entertainment industry, we like to make everyone feel the way we do," Lucas notes. "It’s not rocket science. Sure, we could be the stars, but we want you to feel like a star, too."

Continues Brust, "That’s important to us still today. We’ll find somebody in the crowd and pull them up and make them feel a part of the night."
