Judging by all of the dancing Statue of Liberties on North Avenue, it must be time to start preparing your tax return. Or is it? There is this little matter of April 15. How early, or late, do you plan to file your tax return?

It seems there are pros and cons to filing early. Add to the mix all of these messages coming over the airwaves encouraging people to file early in order to protect themselves from identity theft.

Personally, I've already filed my return. Typically, I prefer to have my taxes in by the end of the first week of February. There are exactly three reasons for this:

  • I get fatigued, looking at piles of tax crap laying all over my house.
  • It is imperative that all those records and receipts get out of the way as soon as possible so as, not to get mixed in with the next year's.
  • I'm broke, and I need my tax return ASAP

You may look at this entirely differently. You might even wonder why you should bust your buns to get your return in, when you have until mid-April. Ultimately, it pretty much breaks down to a matter of preference.
