It's called the Grand Valley Momentum Initiative. It used to be called the Gateway Community Initiative.

Agencies on all levels; local, state and federal are trying to put our city of Grand Junction 'on the map.'

The purpose of this new movement is to increase tourism in the Grand Valley and on the Western Slope. Officials told KKCO NEWS that so many people get as far as Vail or even Aspen that don't know about the western part of Colorado. What it looks like and what is has to offer.

However, there are also questions being raised about the current condition of things. The questions that are being discussed are why is this area is so far behind with job creation and economic growth? Why is the poverty level so high? Why is the suicide rate climbing. What steps need to be taken and what types of opportunities does the  area need to seize to make improvements?

They have lofty goals. They are looking at trying match Moab type tourism numbers.

I definitely understand the part of many people not realizing what and where Grand Junction is, but isn't that one of the reasons we like it here? Do we want to see visitor/tourism dollars increase locally? Absolutely. That is all good for the economy.
