What a score! These lucky scavengers just walked away with an antiquated pool filter and a rancid, phlegm-covered teddy bear. The city of Grand Junction's Spring Clean-Up Program is rolling in full force, and for some, it's a plethora of great finds.

This was the scene directly in front of my house last night a little after 10:00 p.m. For the record, this trash isn't mine. I don't even have a pool. For that matter, I don't have any teddy bears (despite what people say about me). I certainly don't mean to tell these people their business, but there's a very valid reason why that teddy bear made its way to the trash in the first place.

I really can't say I blame them. I've always been bothered by the fact we've become such a "disposable" society. It breaks my heart to see people throwing away items which could easily be salvaged and recycled. Kudos to those who put these items back into use.

A few years ago during the Spring Clean-Up Program, I salvaged an antique school desk from a trash pile in this very same location. One of my neighbors threw it out, and to me at least, it was an awesome treasure. A ton of elbow grease, a few dozen sheets of sandpaper, a little paint, and a spare piece of wood, and that thing was showroom new.

As reasonable as it may seem for some to want to acquire items from these trash piles, it still catches one off guard to see people rooting through the trash in front of your house.

The City of Grand Junction's Spring Cleanup Program rages on! To some it's trash, to others, it's treasure. From where I stand, it's a little weird. It's odd what some people throw away, and ever stranger what some want. Oh well, help yourself. I'm pretty sure there's a pair of swim fins somewhere near the bottom of the pile which would go nicely with the pool filter.
