Grand Junction police became aware of a possible school shooting threat Thursday evening. A student at Orchard Mesa Middle School overheard another planning to carry out a Columbine-type shooting in the next few days.

Luckily, that student told their parents who then contacted the police. Authorities interviewed the child at his home on Friday, when afterward placed him under arrest. He now faces felony menacing charges and school interference charges. His name has not been released.

Police and school officials decided to keep the school open on Friday (April 14) and had extra members of law enforcement on the premises.

The investigation remains open, according to Grand Junction Police, with many witnesses yet to be interviewed.
