The Payless ShoeSource stores in Grand Junction are set to close. Both locations offers sales throughout the stores. How good are the deals?

Payless ShoeSource has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and will close the remaining stores in North America. According to The Detroit News, the filing on Monday came a day after the shoe chain began holding going-out-of-business sales at its North American stores.

I stopped by the store at 2883 North Avenue. The place was jumping. "Store Closing" signs, as well as "20% to 40% off" signs can be found everywhere.

I find it heartbreaking to see a local store close. Unfortunately, it does seem to happen. So, like other recently closed stores such as Sears and Herberger's, Payless ShoeSource is have a "going out of business" sale. How good are the deals?

First things first. Often, when a store closes, the selection of merchandise is pretty thin. That is not the case here. The shelves are fully stocked. Granted, it's only been two days since the closure was announced. Regardless, in my experience, stores frequently anticipate a closure and let their inventory dwindle.

As you can clearly see, merchandise is marked 20% to 40% off. While I didn't conduct in-depth research, the original prices seemed reasonable. Add to that the discount, and you have an excellent opportunity to stock up on footwear.

I contacted the Payless ShoeSource at Mesa Mall, and they confirmed they are offering the same discounts.

According to their webpages, the North Avenue store is open 7 days a week, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Mesa Mall store is open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.

The date when the two Grand Junction stores will close has not been announced.
