Construction has begun on the Grand Junction Amphitheater. We had better get the name right. Please.

This is not the first or even second time I have brought up this topic. Here's a link to a previous post. That's because I think it's that important. You only have ONE shot to get it right. Otherwise, Grand Junction will wind up with the proverbial 'gyro' or 'quesadilla' of concert venues. Meaning NO ONE will know how to pronounce it correctly and it will become laughable and a joke.

As far as the park being named Las Colonias, there's nothing we can do about that now. But, if the powers that be move forward and make the mistake of calling this Las Colonias Amphitheater, they will have dropped the ball. Big time. Hate to see it turn into a $3.6 million 'butt of every joke' that performers will crack.

Think about the simple, but memorable and powerful names to some famous structures and venues. Red Rocks is the perfect example. The Hard Rock cafe, House of Blues. Even going back to Roman times, how about the Coliseum? Simple. Memorable. Power.

Las Colonias? Not so much. Sorry. Not to even bring up the fact that the word 'colon' is IN the name. Trust me, I know road managers, promoters, and artists. As sad as it is to say, it will probably be known as the 'colon ass'.

This is a great chance for Grand Junction to really put itself on the map in the world of entertainment and tourism. Think about it. Please.

Some possibilities that were very popular on polls  I put up were:

  • The Grand
  • The Riverfront
  • The Monument
  • The Geer (memorial for Deputy Geer)
  • Clements Rock (Delaney Clements)

I am pushing for The Grand. Simple. Elegant. Descriptive. Memorable.
