14 years ago, Grand Junction had a very distinct honor as being one of the coveted stops for the Olympic Torch which was on it's way to Salt Lake City.

According to the Wikipedia page, here is the torch's entire route. It started on November 19, 2001 in Greece. It made it's way to Atlanta, Georgia on December 3 traveling 13,500 miles across the country and weaving it's way, eventually to Grand Junction on February 2-3, 2002.

Surprised that I couldn't find as much coverage on this as I thought I would. I did find out the names of six Montrose residents who had the unbelievable honor of being a part of the Olympic Torch relay.

  • Judy Barger - from the Mesa National Bank to the Villa.
  • Pat Craze - 303 31 1/2 Road to Eastmoor Drive
  • Joesph Haber - 2940 1/2 Road to Chris-Mar and F Road.
  • Dave Reed - On North Avenue from 28 to 29 Road
  • Rebecca Schwerdtfeger - 12th and Patterson to 26 3/4 Road
  • Tamara Newlander - 208 Orchard to  Mesa and 1st.

Looking to see what memories you have from this historic event. Any video, pictures, stories, more names of runners, anything and everything you have. I would defiantly like to see what you all have.

Maybe we can convince the Olympic Committee to make a detour, en route to Rio, and stop back through Grand Junction. We'll have snacks and stuff for them.
