Rim Rock Elementary third graders are making a 'change' to help out.

A penny may not seem like a lot. We see them on the ground all the time. How often do you pick one up? Yeah, that's what I thought.

But, this year, the third graders at Rim Rock DID pick them. A lot of them.

They started back in October, one penny at a time. It all started when some students heard a story where a five-year old used his allowance to purchase meals for the local police department. So, they began. One cent at a time.

The goal was to raise money to help not only the Fruita Police and Fire Departments, but also Homeward Bound and Roice-Hurst Humane Society.

Overall, they have collected 150,000 pennies.
