According to a report from CBSLocal.com, fruit being sold in Western Colorado including peaches, nectarines, plums, and pluots, are being recalled due to a potential contamination with Listeria. This brings about two questions: What is Listeria, and secondly, what are pluots?

For the record, Listeria is a genus of bacteria which contains ten species. The resulting Listeriosis is a disease, the overt form of which has a mortality rate of 20 percent.

Pluots, on the other hand, are hybrids between different Prunus species. Here in the U.S., we typically refer to these fruits as interspecific plums.

Wawona Packing Company out of Cutler, California, is voluntarily recalling fruit packed between June 1 through July 12.

According to a statement from Wawona Packing Company, no illnesses have been reported to date.

If you have questions or concerns, contact Wawona Packing at 1-888-232-9912 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. or visit www.wawonapacking.com.
