I spoke with a woman last week about the rising costs of hay and how many people in the Grand Valley are struggling to keep their animals fed even with help from the Colorado Hay Bank, that's when she suggested feeding them Hydroponically.
Kristin Campbell says she's in no way an expert about feeding horses hydroponically but she has been feeding her horses this way for over a year now with some very gratifying results!
Just in case you weren't aware, right now the average price for a bale of hay in Colorado is about $12 each. With that in mind, it means to feed 3 horses, a 1/3 bale each every day, owners are spending $4,380 a year on hay!
Why do that when you can build a custom hydroponic feeding system for 3 horses for $3,000?
Kristan says, the seed to run this system for an entire year is only about $660! So it pays for itself in the first year! And your horses would get fresh, green, nutritious sprouts twice a day!

Kristen spent two years creating my system and now feeds 15 horses every day with it. The benefits are overwhelming:

  1. The financial advantages are most clear: spend $4380 per year on dry hay for 3 horses, or $1533 on fresh, green nutritious sprouts AND a little hay.
  2. Feeding sprouts can totally eliminate instances of dehydration colic in horses who are stressed and refuse to drink, or in horses in the winter who simply do not want to drink cold water, because the sprouts are so high in moisture content.
  3. You can customize the seed mixture for your own animals depending on what you want to accomplish. Some people add flax seed, or sunflower seed to their mix. We feed a 1/3 barley to 2/3 wheat mixture to our horses.
  4. All of the supplies are available locally at places like Western Slope Ag, and Desert Bloom Hydroponics.
  5. Horses aren't the only animals that do well on sprouts. Cows, chickens, and rabbits can eat ONLY sprouts.
